KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Hi! I'm a Korean Touhou fan!

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Oh, my pleasure to meet you.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Come to think of it, I saw you before during Reitaisai. You are wearing the same hat you wore then right now. Is there any big meaning behind it?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

There's nothing special about it. I am just wearing it all the time just because I like it. ^^ (laugh);

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Oh, I see. ^^; I also have a question about Touhou books. Perfect Memento in Strict Sense doesn't have any information about characters introduced since Mountain of Faith. Do you have any plans to write PMiSS2?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Well, for now, I don't have thoughts about writing one. And it's not something I can immediately start writing because I felt writing; I do need the offer from the publisher first.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Ah, I understand. Publishing certainly isn't simple. Also, I've read through the afterword in Grimoire of Marisa which recently came out. You strongly warn the players to refrain from uploading walkthrough videos. I felt that your tone is particularly strong at that part. Why did you write so?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

I discussed about that to highlight a difference between the past and the present.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Yes?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

In the past, uploading gameplay videos was frowned upon, and the game-making companies did not really accept them either. However, nowadays, with the Internet so well developed, there's exceedingly many Touhou strategy videos uploaded online. Hm, to be honest, I don't really want put a strong restriction on those. ^^;;; Still, I wrote that way because I would like to direct the players to the right way.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Ah, is that so ^^;

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Come to think of it, Koreans do regularly come from Korea to visit our booths during events. There was a Korean previously as well.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Yeah, Touhou fanbase has been expanding steadily in Korea since several years ago. Ah! That brings up something I would like to talk to you about. It might be a bit serious, though.

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

What is it?

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

I believe that, for a long time, illegal pirating played a large role in expanding Touhou's influence in Korea. To enjoy the games, you need the Touhou CD's first. However, buying them is difficult for many people, so they often resort to getting pirated copies which is easy to find and costs nothing: modified game installers, P2P file transfer, large file hosting sites, etc... Touhou was able to become popular in many overseas countries and create a massive fanbase definitely because it is easy to obtain various Touhou data online. This may not be a good direction to take; but, thanks to this, Touhou became known to more and more people, and Team Shanghai Alice's popularity increased; so, it might actually be alright to overlook this trend... Something feels wrong about this though.

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

I am also aware that illegal uploading is rampant overseas. Clearly, this is illegal. However, I don't really feel like concerning myself with this problem, so I (would like to) just ignore it. I think I have neither the responsibility nor the authority to interfere with whatever goes on overseas.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Ah. Okay. Then, have you ever thought about entering the overseas market?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Are you talking about selling games overseas?

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Yes, Touhou fanbase have grown large in several places such as Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and Europe. Since legal copies are not published in other countries, foreign fans need to buy overseas from Japan. There's shipping charges though, and the purchase procedure is also complicated.

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Actually, extending the market is quite bothersome. I would need to worry about the overseas as well, and I would need to Dialog to various foreign languages. That would be difficult for me.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

That certainly is an issue ^^; how about delegating others to handle problems like translation?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

^^; (he just laughed — not necessarily a bad meaning)

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

^^; I would like to ask one last question. Hong Meiling is a Chinese person, right?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Yes, that is right. Well, to be accurate, a Chinese youkai.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Have you ever thought about making a Korean character? (◀I asked this because it's a dream for countless Touhou fans in Korea.)

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Oh, I've never particularly thought about a Korean one. I don't know much about Korea in detail.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Korea also has various youkai and ghosts that would make good character material. Would you research about some?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

I see. I'll consider that from now on.

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Thank you very much. ^^ Would it be possible to get an autograph?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Well, there are people waiting in line, and writing an autograph would take some time...

KAIRU

{{{ja}}}

Then, how about on this CD [TN: a UFO CD he bought just now from ZUN's booth] right here?

ZUN

{{{ja}}}

Alright.
